My First Marlborough

Posted on

Recently a close friend and wine confidant of mine expressed to me that he only drank Sauvignon Blancs from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. I thought he was being closed minded, until tonight.

I went to dinner at a new restaurant in San Francisco called Dobbs Ferry, after the small town in Westchester County. It’s owned and managed by a couple East Coast guys and the menu is reminiscent of somewhere I would dine in my home town, Rye. My friend (also hailing from Rye, NY) and I shared a white shrimp cocktail appetizer with tarragon dressing, hearts of palm and cucumbers. It was light and traditionally East Coast – seasoned with Old Bay. My friend ordered a large portion of the mussels and clams (literally the largest bowl of mussels and clams I have ever seen, and she ate ALL of it) and I had the Chicken Scarpariello – so delicious! The chicken was on the bone – which I usually don’t like for some reason that I can never explain – and so juicy and tender. It was served with roasted potatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers and sausage. I loved it.

We decided to order a white wine since we were both getting lighter dishes. I saw the 2009 Drylands Marlborough New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the wine list  for $36.00 and went for it. The wine had an intense nose with hints of passionfruit and lemon. The taste was very refreshing and finely textured with a succulent finish. We both loved it, and it complimented our meal quite well. I found it online for under $20 so I think I will buy a few bottles after my next paycheck.
